As part of what is a so-called superfood, avocado has gained popularity since the late ’90s. It is rich in monosaturated fat, fiber, folate, vitamins, and other nutritious contents good for our body. The versatility of avocados makes its way into the main ingredients in many savory and sweet delicacies. These include guacamole, smoothies, various dessert fillings, decorations, and many more. People all over the world love avocado. It caused a 33% y-o-y increase in the U.S, based on a report on January 2021 by Rabobank. Indonesia is an avocado exporter sitting in the 5th rank for the biggest avocado production worldwide according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2016 with 304.938 tons.
Mexico in the first place leading with 1.889.354 tons, then pursued by Dominica with 601,349 tons, Peru with 455,394 tons, and Colombia with 309,938 tons.
However, for 3 years consecutively, Indonesia’s avocado production has been consistently growing. Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) reports show in 2018, Indonesia produced about 382.537 tons, 461.600 tons the next year, and 609.050 tons in 2020. There is a higher chance that Indonesia’s position as an avocado exporter now has improved.
The data provided above indicate a promising chance for Indonesia to be the biggest avocado exporter in Asia besides China. With Malaysia and Thailand have been exotic fruit exporter giants for durian, Indonesia should make all efforts to show our dominance as a notable avocado exporter. Furthermore, Indonesia’s avocado production is higher compared to China’s. In 2018, avocado is placed 10th in fruit commodities produced by Indonesia after banana, mango orange, pineapple, durian, salak, rambutan, papaya, and jackfruit. While in China, avocado is their 12th position in fruit production.
In general, cultivating avocados require an immense amount of patience. Furthermore, they are challenging crops to grow and demand high maintenance at some points. Indonesia is not yet ready to produce special kinds of avocado for oils.
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and FAO suggested that by 2030, avocado will be the second fruit commodity that will overtake the export volume for tropical fruits globally. Major investments are essential to support Indonesia’s dream as the central avocado exporter in Asia. This is to boost production, figure out the best transportation to deliver our fruits, and improve the quality to meet the rigorous export standards. Although tricky to cultivate, avocado is a resilient crop. Moreover, it can be harvested in any season in a tropical country like Indonesia. It is a shot for Indonesia and it is just about time to show our worth to the world.
