Bali mangosteen finally sees the light in the tunnel as we have passed the critical pandemic waves a number of times now. There has been an increase in the price points of Bali mangosteen following the demands made by countries such as the Middle East to China in 2021. The local farmers could not be more delighted hearing the news considering this January, this fruit is in season and grows in abundance.
In October, Bali mangosteen commodity successfully sold out with a rise of 100%. It was sold from its regular worth of Rp15.000/kg to Rp30.000/kg. It was insane! Two major reasons pointed out by Jro Putu Tesan, the President of Mangosteen and Indonesia Horticulture Community in Indonesia. First, there was a surge of demand by the international market such as China and the Middle East.
He explained that Bali alone could only support 55% of the high demands coming from China. They asked for 36 tons (the highest so far!). Bali also supplies 1 – 2 tons in each delivery to the UEA. The second reason why Bali mangosteen is extremely popular is because of the quality. It is notably one of the best that stands on the same level as Thailand. At this point, Bali and Thailand are competing with each other to increase their quality produce.
According to Jro Putu Tesen, the regencies in Bali especially Tabanan, Jembrana, Buleleng, and Karangasem become the first-hand source of Bali mangosteen. The potential deriving from these regencies will be kept up-to-date in order to push the export quality improvement so Indonesia can boost the sales for this fruit commodity to more foreign markets in the years ahead. As of today, the high demand for Bali mangosteen from China and the Middle East has proven that Indonesia has successfully delivered its A-game in the export industry.
What we hope for this advancement is that it will help Bali to recover from the global pandemic. The little island has suffered for two years causing a major decline in its main economic sector, hospitality.
Considering the popular demand for Bali mangosteen in 2021, we see a bright opportunity for the export industry in Indonesia to encourage the export market to the European countries. The challenge now for Indonesia is to meet the fixed requirements to enter the retail markets in Europe. One of them is GAP or Good Agriculture Practices. This is to ensure the exported product has met the quality. Jro Putu Tesen is positive that Bali, Indonesia can level up their export game in Europe soon.
